Heres how many people play Fortnite

The Fortnite player count currently hovers around 83 million, with around 3 million online at any given time. The stats can be a bit wooly though because Epic are careful with them, only realising numbers when they’re some sort of new record. And, obviously, the more records you set the harder it is to beat them.

Basically official numbers are released sporadically – big events mean big player counts and Epic only really shouts about the really big numbers. So if something only does, say, 99% of the numbers of a previous event, Epic is saying nothing. It might still be tens of millions of players but they’ll never mention it if it’s even so much as one player less. It’s always got to be more.

It makes sense really, Epic is never going to say the numbers went down and the big event stats for things like end of season events, or concerts, can be absolutely astronomical. The last officially released figures are from December 2020’s end of season event, which saw over 15 million players online at once.

There’s also a range of different ways of counting things, with stats for registered players, concurrent players and so on. Which add a little extra confusion if you’re not clear on the differences. We’re going to take a look at it and explain what it means. So coming up here’s how many people play Fortnite and the current player stats for 2022.

How many people play Fortnite?

We defeated him! A record 15.3 million concurrent players joined forces in our biggest event ever to fight back Galactus in today’s in-game event, while more than 3.4 million cheered and watched on @YouTubeGaming and @Twitch! pic.twitter.com/IAcNpcPKEwDecember 2, 2020

The basic Fortnite player count is currently around 3 million for general concurrent online players at any given time – so that’s 3 million players all logged in and actively playing at once. Although that’s a number third party statistics estimate, and nothing to do with anything officially revealed by Epic.

The last official Epic press release numbers come from the Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 5 Galactus event in December 2020. That saw 15.3 millions players logging concurrently to see the season close – a big jump from the previously touted number of 12.3 million players that all logged in at once to watch the Travis Scott event back in April 2020.

That’s also an impressive increase from the 10.8 million concurrent players that logged on for the in-game live Marshmello concert in February 2019. The numbers Epic has released were always going up, so it’s likely that events since have failed to beat the released numbers.

But that’s not to say the numbers aren’t going up because they are. In 2020 Fortnite had around 80 million active monthly players, in 2021 that increased to 83 million. Then there’s the number of registered players. That’s a tally of all the Fortnite accounts that exists. It doesn’t represent the active player though, as it counts every single account that exists, even people that signed up once and then never played. It’s not a great way to see how many people are playing Fortnite because it’s obviously always going to go up. However, in March 2019 there were 250 million registered players and in May 2020 that number jumped to 350 million:

Fortnite now has over 350 million registered players! In April, players spent over 3.2 billion hours in game. 🙌🥳Let’s keep the party going with our Party Royale Premiere LIVE on May 8 at 9PM ET featuring @DillonFrancis @steveaoki @deadmau5: https://t.co/H18c3UgBL1 pic.twitter.com/Cgt3r7LXQOMay 6, 2020

So that’s an increase of 100 million registered accounts in just over a year, not a number to be ashamed of.

One thing that’s harder to work out is how Fortnite stacks up against other games. Because so many of these stats are cherry picked from super successful moments and not often updated it’s hard to compare things directly. You can sort of guesstimate things though. The highest number of Fortnite players active in a month was recorded in August 2018 at 78.3 million. For comparison, Apex Legends boasted ’70 million players’ in Oct 2019, while the original battle royale, Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, hit a 400 million player peak in June 2018, and 3.24 million concurrents in January 2018,  but currently has a peak monthly players count around 886,255 for April 2020. Warzone on the other hand hit 50 million players in April 2020.

It all points to Fortnite continuing to be the biggest battle royale out there for the time being.
