The best PS4 monitors for 2022 – give your PS4 a worthy display companion

The best PS4 monitor to consider right now will almost certainly have a lot in common with those that are PC-focused. However, this is no bad thing, and nor does it make the best PS4 monitor a null and void niche – and nor does the arrival of the PS5. With the top displays and gaming screens, in general, having years of refinement behind them now, means that PS4 monitors reap the benefits of years of display honing that the gaming monitor market has trail blazed. This means that the images will be exquisite, basically by default. And to further the reasoning, there is a genuine increase in demand for console-focused monitors as our gaming setups change and become more and more integrated.

In terms of specifics, it should be said that you will be stuck with the native framerate that your PS4 or PS4 Pro – and the game itself – can manage: a maximum of 60fps. Which will be a downside for many. However, this still means that some of the top 4K gaming monitors will be a real possibility as they (generally) don’t go above that level of refresh rate too. So while you can’t expect to have incredibly high frames per second because you’ve got one of the best PS4 monitors, you can get a great, gaming-focused screen (i.e. not just a TV) that will have features beneficial to playing games, while avoiding the expensive premium-adding tech and resolutions that some gaming screens have.

We now live in a time where we don’t have to just plug your console into your home’s main television – you can get a dedicated screen for it. Of course, the best gaming TVs (opens in new tab) and the best TVs for PS5 are going to be many folks’ first port of call, but we are now at the stage where there are a few monitors that are clearly console-focused. But even still, screens that are PC-first, can be great PS4 monitors. If a display is stuffed with the latest and greatest, and fastest, screen techs, then it’ll likely serve you very well as a PS4 monitor too.

1. ASUS CG32UQ

The best PS4 monitor

Specifications

Screen size: 32-inchPanel type: VAAspect ratio: 16:9Resolution: 3840x2160Response time: 5msWeight: 20 lbs net

Reasons to buy

+Incredible picture quality+Great color range, depth and contrasts+Full 4K and HDR goodness

Reasons to avoid

-A bit pricey-Increasingly hard to get hold of

It’s refreshing to see monitors dedicated or at least aimed at, console gaming making solid appearances in 2020. And this is a seriously great console monitor. The CG32UQ is a console-focused gaming monitor and has serious gaming pedigree and stock behind it coming from ASUS.

It is a little expensive but you get some serious monitor, tech, and performance for your money. Its main headline, if you will, is that it is a 32-inch 4K VA-panel monitor – this is incredibly useful, right off the bat, as it’ll make transitioning from a 4K TV that many consoles are currently hooked up to, easy to undertake. You’ll still get the same resolution and, extra importantly, the effects of HDR as the CG32UQ has a DisplayHDR 600 rating. This HDR excellence is backed up by glorious colors and contrasted gained by the monitor’s 95% DCI-P3 rating and contrast ratio of 3000:1.

On top of that, you will still get some of ASUS’s quality monitor techs as standard: FreeSync, GameFast mode, AuraSync lighting, flicker-free pictures, and a very handy remote control. For a full verdict check out my ASUS CG32UQ review (opens in new tab), but this is definitely the best console monitor you can buy right now.

2. ASUS VG279Q

The best budget PS4 monitor

Specifications

Screen size: 27-inchPanel type: IPSAspect ratio: 16:9Resolution: 1920x1080Response time: 1msWeight: 12.3 lbs

Reasons to buy

+Versatile+Excellent value for money+IPS panel grants great image quality

Reasons to avoid

-1080p may seem small for premium consoles

Yup, it’s another ASUS model, but you’d be hard pushed to find a better 1080p monitor for PS4 right now and that’s why this is a slightly different entrant into the best PS4 rundown. This is because the image quality and range and richness of color that comes for the VG279Q’s IPS panel does an enormous amount of good work. The silver lining of that 1080p resolution is that the image work done by the IPS panel is not stretched over so many pixels so the clarity and crispness are exquisite. It also means that the ASUS VG279Q comes in much cheaper than a lot of its larger and flashier counterparts. Nice.

Like a lot of monitors, though, this is made with PC in mind first which means you get a whole host of extra goodies: FreeSync; low blue light; flicker-free; and game fast mode, to name but a few. These might not always be used when playing on console, but those that don’t just keep themselves available, increasing the monitor’s potential flexibility and versatility.

3. ASUS ROG Strix XG27UQ

The best premium 4k PS4 monitor

Specifications

Size: 27-inchResolution: 4K (3840×2160)Refresh Rate: 144HzResponse Time: 1msPanel: IPSPorts: 2x HDMI 2.0, 2x DisplayPort, 2x USB 3.0, earphone jack

Reasons to buy

+Perfect specs of 4K, 144Hz, 1ms+ASUS quality

Reasons to avoid

-Fluctuating stock

The ASUS XG27UQ comes into this list by virtue of being one of the absolute best 4K monitors, period. It has incredible specs to boot, but for the first time ever a 4K monitor with 1ms response time and a 144Hz refresh rate is below the $1k mark. Quite considerably actually, coming in at around $800/£800. It’s still a hefty price tag, don’t get me wrong, but it’s far cheaper than the other top tier offerings.

The ASUS XG27UQ is like a gaze into what gaming will be like for everyone 5 to 10 years down the line. With ray tracing on, Cyberpunk 2077 had my jaw on the floor, with stunning lighting effects and texture detail throughout Night City. As did Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, with the sunrays splitting the treetops. If you’re looking for a 4K monitor for your PS4 or PS5 then you’d be hard pushed to find a PC-first screen that does it better than this; you will not be disappointed with this monitor.

4. BenQ EX3203R

The best curved PS4 monitor

Specifications

Screen size: 32-inchPanel type: VAAspect ratio: 16:9Resolution: 2560x1440Response time: 4msWeight: 18 lbs

Reasons to buy

+Terrific curved panel+Crisp images+Good viewing angles

Reasons to avoid

-Lower end of HDR support

If you’re a fan of curved monitors for gaming then this is your best bet for a PS4 monitor with shape. This BenQ beaut is not a budget or entry-level priced model but the bang for buck its price tag represents is almost certainly worth it.

It has got a 1440p resolution which is not what our consoles are designed for but the PS4 will work fine with it and doesn’t look odd as its all at the right ratio still. Its 1800R curves nature really draws you in and heightens the immersion into games, and this would work perfectly as a PS4 monitor. And, if you’re prone to a bit of craning and head moving while gaming, the curved screen will give you more in the way of viewing angles too. It’s also an HDR panel that will appeal again to those used to a modern 4K TV, though the EX3203R’s are not of a stellar level. You’ll also get a smattering of proper gaming monitor tech such as FreeSync 2 and BenQ’s eye care focused techs which are genuinely useful.

Again, for more info you can check out my BenQ EX3203R review (opens in new tab) and see how enamored I was with it generally.

Acer Predator CG7

5. Acer Predator CG7

The best big-screen 4K HDR PS4 monitor

Specifications

Screen size:: 43-inchAspect ratio:: 16:9Resolution:: 4K; 3840x2160Brightness:: 1,000 nitsResponse time:: 1msViewing angle:: 178/178 degreesContrast ratio:: 4,000:1

Reasons to buy

+Mega 43-inch 4K panel+VA tech delivers huge contrast+Perfect for PS5 too

Reasons to avoid

-Not a *true* HDR panel-Backlight is edge-lit-Very pricey

This 43-inch monster is Acer’s answer to the ‘go big or go home’ approach to PS4 monitors. The Predator CG7 is basically TV-sized, so take its space demands into consideration, while also remembering it’s a monitor still, of course.

Getting right to it the CG7 has a VA panel that is the real 4K deal and good for fully 1,000 nits of brightness, has a 1ms response time, and a full 120Hz refresh rate via HDMI 2.1 – so it’ll be right at home whenever you upgrade from PS4 to PS5 too.

As for colour accuracy, Acer claims the CG7 has a 90% DCI-P3 gamut, which isn’t too bad at all, and it is also DisplayHDR 1000 certified. However, it only has 14 edge-lit dimming zones rather than full-array local dimming, so it’s not the full HDR deal. That said, the inherent 4,000:1 contrast of the VA panel combined with that powerful 1,000 nits brightness means that this is about as good as it gets with having full-array dimming.

In the right setup, the results will be incredible for a PS4 – it’s got all the chops of a gaming screen and is actually ideal for multi-machine setups. However, given its resolution and HDR pop, it’s probably slightly better for a PS4 Pro which will help get closer to the monitor’s true potential (in terms of 4K and HDR support).

6. BenQ EW3280U

The best PS4 monitor for entertainment as well as games

Specifications

Screen size: 32-inchPanel type: IPSAspect ratio: 16:9Response time: 5msRefresh rate: 60HzWeight: 17.85 lbs

Reasons to buy

+BenQ picture quality+Great HDR and supporting features+Exceptional colours and contrasts

Reasons to avoid

-Demands a large desk setup-A little pricey

This is one of the best PS4 monitors without a doubt. Its 4K resolution, combined with its size, and colors, and IPS panel make it a great all-rounder. It won’t offer the mad speeds that non-4K monitors can offer, of course, but as 60Hz experiences go, this is great, and the overall picture quality, HDR and contrasts, and richness of every shade, as well as the detailed, grain-less images, are a big win. Its price tag might make it more of a contender during sales but this offering from BenQ is great and they really have proved they can run with the usual suspects again. It does need a fair bit of desk real estate so that is a consideration to be aware of, but otherwise, the monitor is really worth it.

If you want a 32-inch big one when it comes to 4K monitors for gaming, then this is a very strong contender – particularly if you’ll use the monitor for entertainment as well as general PC use. As a result, this is a strong contender for a top 4K monitor for gaming, but its role as a top PS4 monitor might just be its best use and unique selling point.

Samsung CRG5

7.Samsung CRG5 24-inch

The best entry-level high-refresh PS4 monitor

Specifications

Screen size:: 23.5-inchAspect ratio:: 16:9Resolution:: Full HD; 1920x1080Brightness:: 250cd/m2Response time:: 4msViewing angle:: 178/178 degreesContrast ratio:: 3,000:1

Reasons to buy

+120Hz refresh support+VA panel technology+Very keenly priced

Reasons to avoid

-No HDR support

If you’re on a budget for a PS4 monitor, then do not panic at all. This Samsung panel proves it’s very possible to bag a high-refresh 1080p monitor with a curved premium panel from one of the biggest brands in the business. And all for Under $150 / £150. We give you the Samsung GRG5.

The most noteworthy features begin with a 24-inch curved VA panel – though the drawback is that it’s not HDR compliant. This, in turn, though, is balanced out by a 3,000:1 contrast which means it’s actually capable of more dynamic range than many monitors that claim HDR capabilities. It also sports an 1800R curve, for added immersion.

Predictably, at this price point, we’re talking 1080p rather than 4K. But then if you want that super smooth high-refresh experience, you’re not going to get it at 4K. Likewise, at 24 inches this is hardly a huge or cinematic screen. But, once again, something has to give to hit this level of affordability.

As a gaming-focused monitor, it has several additional gaming-friendly features including low input lag mode. If there is a catch, it’s probably pixel response. Samsung quotes 4ms, which isn’t too shabby.

Razer Raptor

The best PC-first PS4 monitor

Specifications

Screen size: 27-inchPanel type: IPSAspect ratio: 16:9Resolution: 2560x1440Response time: 1msWeight: 12.3 lbs

Reasons to buy

+Exceptional picture quality+Excellent colors and contrasts+Offers great PC use for multi platform setups

Reasons to avoid

-A little expensive-Best features are PC focused

Razer’s first foray into gaming displays is a great success. The Raptor is a 27-inch panel that has quality specs under the hood. An IPS panel with a 1440p resolution, it has a 1ms response time and 144Hz refresh rate. There’s also a cool black design that has RGB in the stand – because of course it does – and a mesh material all over the back, much like you’d find on speakers. The traditional Razer-green cables contrast nicely with the black stand and monitor and are tidily kept in check at the back with cable guides, too. The ports will have you covered practically speaking too: along with the HDMI for your PS4, there’s a DisplayPort, one USB-C, two USB 3s, and a good old headphone jack.

This is a terrific gaming monitor all in then, and one which has a quality of picture that alone makes it easy to recommend as a PS4 monitor. The screen’s speed is fast and pacey for smooth pictures, the image quality is crisp and gorgeous, and the color range and contrasts are deep and immersive. It’s a little pricey perhaps, but if you’re looking to get a great PC monitor that can also be a great PS4 monitor for picture quality then this is it.

9. LG 27UL650

The best LG PS4 monitor

Specifications

Screen size: 27-inchPanel type: IPSAspect ratio: 16:9Response time: 5msRefresh rate: 60HzWeight: 13.90 lbs

Reasons to buy

+Great color accuracy+FreeSync compatibility +Not too expensive

Reasons to avoid

-No frills-Limited versatility – only 60Hz

Offering another budget-level entry point into the PS4 monitor market, the LG 27UL650 is an IPS panel that has excellent levels of color, contrast, and low input lag. The former of these is manifested in excellent color accuracy and the addition of HDR10. This means that if you’re after a PS4 monitor which could be right at home in a desk-bound setup, and usable for creative tasks, design, and general everyday use then this would be a great option. Yup, you’ll still have the 60Hz refresh rate but that’s fast becoming acceptable if the overall package is good value – which this is.
