The best Cyberpunk 2077 lifepath and how it affects you

Picking the best Cyberpunk 2077 lifepath is one of the earliest choices you have to make in the game, and deciding if you want to be a Street Kid, Nomad, or Corpo feels like it could have a significant impact on how your playthrough will pan out. You have almost no information to base this selection on, but don’t stress too much over it as it won’t actually have a particularly world-defining impact on the overall story in Cyberpunk 2077. There are some subtle differences, of course, which is why we’re here to explain what the Street Kid, Nomad, and Corpo options entail.

Naturally there are some mild spoilers covering the first hour of the game here, so if you want to go in completely fresh then you can be reassured there is no ‘best’ choice as such for your Cyberpunk 2077 lifepath, as they all get pretty much the same missions and options along the way. You’re simply choosing what background your story will play out in front of, so pick the one you like the sound of the most and don’t worry about it.

Cyberpunk 2077 lifepath options explained

At the start of the game you’ll have to pick a Cyberpunk 2077 lifepath from Street Kid, Nomad, and Corpo. It’s basically a backstory for your character – who they are and where they come from. Each one has a separate opening story mission and that is pretty much the only difference. Once you’ve played through the intro each character will end up in the same apartment, with access to the same clothes, weapons, mods and so on. Nothing is opened or closed to you depending on the choice you make. You will get different lifepath dialogue options occasionally, but these mainly add color and, again, don’t add or remove any options or choices. Next up we’ll take a look at the opening missions for each option and you can see which one seems the most ‘you’.

Cyberpunk 2077 Nomad lifepath

Playing as a Nomad starts you out in the Badlands, having just recently left your Nomad clan to go it alone. The story starts with you getting your car repaired after it broke down, before being run out of town by the sheriff. You then meet with a client looking for help smuggling something into Night City. Together you cross the border and things… don’t go smoothly but it all ends with you living in Night City ready to take on the world. The Nomad option is the only one that appears to have a unique mission – much later in the game you’ll be able to recover your car from the opening mission and add it to your available vehicles.

Cyberpunk 2077 Corpo lifepath

Fancy a corp background? Starting out as a Corpo means your game begins in Arasaka Tower, which – as you’ll later discover – becomes quite an important location. You get called to the big bosses office, where he’s watching a meeting with the European Space Council. Things turn… sour, Jenkins gives you a special task, and off you go to meet with a friend at a nightclub to mull things over. You’re followed, however, and things go from bad to worse for you. Fast forward six months, you’ve left Arasaka Corp, and you’re ready to take on Night City as a mercenary from your apartment in Megabuilding H10. Catchy name.

Cyberpunk 2077 Street Kid lifepath

Choosing the Street Kid lifepath means you’re a child of Night City. Born and raised in Watson, you’re well-known in the area but you’ve been away for a couple of years having tried (and failed) to make a life elsewhere. But, that doesn’t stop plenty of the local fixers from knowing your name, and plenty of others pleased to see you back in NC. The barman at your local is having some trouble, and the fact you’re known to be a reliable – and local – merc, means he comes to you for help. You see, he’s got himself in a bit of debt with Kirk, a fixer with quite the reputation for being a troublemaker. You’ll go and visit Kirk and offer to do him a job in return for clearing the debt, but of course not everything is quite as easy as Kirk claims when it comes to actually getting said job done. But you do make a fast friend off the back of it, and really kick off your return to Night City in style.
